Original character design © Games Workshop

Around about 1998/1999 I applied for a job creating character artwork for Games Workshop and this was one of the pieces I designed. I used an already existing design and then dramatised the figure.

This is a detail from the torso of the armor showing the mix of pipework and plating. Also the two streamers that fall forward from the bottom of the helmet. I really like getting a feel of depth and texture to objects using such a simple media as pencil.

This thumbnail is taken from the top of the armour at the back. Although there is more detail to the model I felt obscuring some of it with smoke would add to the depth of the character. You can just see the top of the backpack through the smoke and light shafts. The helmet is partially masked by smoke moving from the back to the front.

I also created a design on the fabric robe that the character is depicted wearing. Making the design fit the bumps and hollows created by the figure wearing the outfit always adds to a feeling of reality.

At the time (as far as I am aware) no existing picture featuring this character existed. Although the original design is not my own I enjoyed adding a feeling of life and movement to what was at the time a metal figurine.
