This
is a still from an animation I created a couple of years ago. In this
the objects are made of different materials also they are different
shapes so have different friction properties in water. This means
that they float and fall in different ways. The animation shows the
objects falling slowly to the bottom of the pool and the bubbles move
and dissipate as the water in the pool creates waves on the top surface.
The
cube slowly turns over as support changes from one surface to the
other. It slowly rotates until it is sat on the solid bottom of the
pool. Whereas the metal ball simply sinks to the bottom without any
noticeable rotation. The cylinder is meant to resemble a can of something
with an air pocket inside to lend buoyancy.
The
water is actually a plane over the top of the image, intersecting
with the object of the pool. I added both noise to give the wave effect
and IOR to refract the light source and the image seen through it.
Adding a level of fog and graininess to the water lends a level of
realism.
In
the real world in which we all live, everything casts a shadow even
the transparent bubbles. As the animation continues the shadows of
the many bubbles move and change.
The
steps or ladder into the pool are chromed and reflect the entire scene.
The blue areas on the object that are shown all over, are reflections
of the sky image that is included and the white areas are the reflection
of the bottom of the pool with the light source from above. There
is only one light source as you would have during day time in reality.
